Movie Review: Rockstar (2011)

 Bollywood Movie Rockstar

Written and Directed by Imtiaz Ali

"Yha se bohot door... Galat aur sahi ke paar ek maidan hai... Main vha milunga tujhe..."

Watched the Bollywood movie Rockstar and what to say! As much as Imtiaz Ali always impresses me with storylines involving complexity of the human emotions, the way the stories end up, causes me to stop and reflect back on the building of the plot.
The singing voice of Mohit Chauhan was the only thing that kept me hooked up throughout the movie. Apart from that, I genuinely didn't find anything likeable in the film. Every song had a story related to it, perfectly matching to the prevailing situation of JJ (played by Ranbir Kapoor). But the involvement of love story angle felt like a disruption in it. And Heer's acting by Nargis Fakhri🙏Falling short of words to praise it. Because there was rarely anything in her acting to be praised🙂
As said by Imtiaz Ali, she was a fresh face and he found her perfectly resonating with Heer's role. I too, agree, her appearance was a suitable element for the role. But the way she acted was disappointing. I know it was her debut movie and imperfections were bound to be there, but as a viewer, I am just writing what I felt about it. Moreover her expressions in some scenes were bizarre, making me think why she clenches her jaws that much.
Ranbir Kapoor acted good, I must say. He did his job well👍
However regarding the story, I'm still not sure what kind of love it was between JJ and Heer. I mean was it really love?🫤
Jordan and Heer undoubtedly had developed an attachment. But love?🧐 It really never felt like love until the last scene when Jordan rushes to meet Heer while she was in coma and dies. To be honest, I never found any moment from JJ's side where I could feel his love towards her. Heer was often gentle towards him and her love could be felt in it. But JJ was mostly like, do this! do that! Else he would end up getting angry. In fact, how violent he was while forcefully hugging Heer for a goodbye despite her resenting to it. He legit threatened, "Main keh rha hoon idhar aa! Nhi to main—" What type of love was it?😵😵  Who talks like this to a person they claim to love, even if angry. Although I know it was a flawed character. But to this extent, it seems unacceptable. If the character has flaws, then there has to be some point in the movie when he realizes these flaws and make amends. But unfortunately, nothing of that sort ever happened. That aggressiveness in fact strengthened my doubt how can it be love.
And yes, I must also mention that JJ indeed was left heartbroken in the last scene when Heer died. But that too was because of the pain of losing someone he was so connected to. Just that. Love necessarily has to be the reason behind that connection, it didn't feel such to me.
JJ eventually gets the stardom he had dreamt of, after the heartbreak. And he sings the song, "Naadan parindey ghar aa jaa..." What a song👏👏👏👏
The movie gets over after that. But I am still clueless what was the whole point of it.
Before watching the movie, I was very excited as I had heard this movie is a masterpiece. And after watching the movie, I need to correct the sentence that not the movie, but the songs are the masterpiece🙂
Commendable job by AR Rahman, Mohit Chauhan and all the people who contributed🫡🙌🙌 Songs were the only driving force for me to bear this 2 hours 39 minutes movie😮‍💨
